In our Catholic Tradition, November is a special time for remembering family and friends who have gone before us to eternal life with God. Our belief in the communion of saints and all holy ones invites us to pray for them and ask them to pray for us.
The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed takes place annually on November 2nd in St. Vincent de Paul Chapel. For any questions, please contact Fr. Bernard Knapke.

Matthew served the University in the Office of University Advancement as its Director of Advancement for the School of Theology and Religious Studies. He joined the University this past June, bringing over 25 years of experience supporting organizations dedicated to human flourishing. + Vernadine Jackson, who passed away on August 14. Vernadine was the wife of Lawrence Jackson, a Multi-Trade Technician in the Office of Facilities Maintenance and Operations. + Dr. Alice Subley Mandanis, who passed away on August 2. Dr. Mandanis was the mother of Heidi Mandanis Schooner, an Ordinary Professor in the Columbus School of Law. Dr. Mandanis received her MA and PhD degrees from The Catholic University of America. Shortly after joining the Marymount University faculty in 1971, Dr. Mandanis became its Provost, serving for 21 years as the university's chief academic officer. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on September 12 at National Memorial Park (7482 Lee Highway) in Falls Church, VA. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions to the John P. and Alice S. Mandanis Scholarship at Marymount University. + Bridget Ellen Sheridan, who passed away on May 22nd. Bridget worked for several decades as a staff member of the university, principally in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering. Bridget retired from the university in 2015. + Marguerite Ann Leonard, who passed away on February 26th. Marguerite was the mother of Maureen Boyle, the Assistant to the Dean in the School of Philosophy. Marguerite herself worked two different stints here at the university. In the 1950s, she was on the staff of the Department of Psychology, and in the 1990s she worked for CUA Press. + Vernon Ennels, who passed away on December 14th. Before his retirement from the university in 2016, Vernon served as a special police officer in the Department of Public Safety. + Charles (Charley) Rutherford, who passed away on December 13th. Charley was the husband of Deborah Brown, the Senior Associate Vice President for University Advancement. For over 40 years, Charley taught Medieval Literature and Old English at the University of Maryland. Funeral services for Charley were held in private. A celebration of his life for family, friends, and colleagues will be held at the University of Maryland in the spring.
