+Thomas Patrick Melady, M.A. 1952, Ph.D. 1955, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2014. Melady was American ambassador under three presidents, including U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See from 1989 to 1993. He received an honorary degree from the University at Commencement in 1992. In 2011, the Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies presented Melady with its first Bishop John Joseph Keane Medallion for  lifetime achievement in service to his country, Church, and the academic world. The Mass of Christian burial for Ambassador Melady will take place on Monday, January 13, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle.
