As tensions have risen between Ukraine and Russia, The Catholic University of America has responded in prayer and through opportunities to learn and teach about Ukraine and Russian relations.

The University has many ties to the Ukrainian Catholic Church:

  • The School of Theology and Religious Studies (TRS) is home of the Institute for the Study of Eastern Christianity and its Center for Ukrainian Church Studies. The school’s dean, Very Rev. Mark Morozowich, is a Ukrainian Catholic priest.
  • St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Seminary has been a neighbor since 1941, and its seminarians study at Catholic University.
  • The Ukrainian National Shrine of the Holy Family is our neighbor across Harewood Road.

"The Catholic University of America, in common with the rest of our country, is shocked and dismayed by the news that Vladimir Putin has violated the sovereignty of Ukraine,'' University President John Garvey wrote in a letter to the community on Feb. 25. “Our prayers are with the people of Ukraine, who face great uncertainty for their own personal safety, as well as their national sovereignty.”

Pray

Continued prayers on the part of the community will be offered for the victims of the continued violence in the Ukraine. There were petitions for Peace in the World and for the people of Ukraine at all University Masses on Ash Wednesday.

The international Caritas confederation is collecting funds to help Caritas Ukraine. In the United States, that is through Catholic Relief Services. Internationally, you can donate through Caritas International.

100% funds raised given directly to the victims of the attack on Ukraine.

Why Financial Donations?
Families are going to need food, clothing and shelter. The most effective way we can help families is raise funds and then empower families to regain some sort of normalcy by being able to purchase their own food items, clothes, etc. In short, financial donations cut down on hidden cost and prevent delays in getting families exactly what they need to begin the recovery processes.
